Christians: Stop looking for a political savior!

Christians should keep their hope in God and not our politicians.  As I've read what's out there in the blogosphere, I have come to the conclusion that too many Christians are depending on "Christian politicians" to bring this country out of its spiritual malaise and decline with "godly government" laws, regulations and proclamations.  On Palm Sunday, it may be ironic to know we have the exact same problem Jesus' followers had on the day He entered Jerusalem on a donkey from the Mount of Olives.  (No, that does not mean Jesus was a Republican.)  That day, they were praising His name as Savior saying,  "Hosanna, son of David!  Jesus, save us please!"  Five days later, they shouted, "Crucify him!"  Jesus came to save their souls but they were looking for a political savior from their Roman oppressors.  When they didn't get what they wanted, the mob gave Jesus up to the power-hungry and corrupt political and religious "leaders".  They needed a spiritual Savior, they were demanding an earthly king.

For some reason, these days we are looking for a president (a mere man) who will save the soul of our country when we really need to turn back to God and ask for a spiritual rescue.  Let's face it.  Our country may have been founded on Christian principles but we are hardly a Christian nation.  We cannot expect a man, especially one who has been influenced and shaped by the political process in America, to lead this country to and through a spiritual revival.

I am also convinced that we cannot depend on "religious" leaders to put aside their own quest for power and influence and serve to the point of sacrifice.  We live in a world of charlatans who are more interested in profits than living the life of a prophet.  When "prophets" preach to reap more profits, you know that you are far from the kingdom of God.  For some reason, we want our leaders to be powerful, polished and politically well-connected... everything Jesus was not.

I'm not saying we should withdrawal from the world and never vote unless Jesus himself returns to run for president.  We need to be salt and light in the world.  We need to vote and influence the political process for good as much as we can.  Standing on the sidelines complaining or picking up our marbles and staying home is not the answer.  It will take the collective prayers and actions of godly people to bring about and sustain an authentic revival in this country.  Our "leaders" have forsaken us.  Ask God to raise up new leaders with the hearts of servants, ready to sacrifice their own self-interests for the good of the country and, maybe more importantly, the Kingdom.
